생성형 AI라는 거울에 과학기술정책대학원 공유 연구실을 반사시킨다. 반사되는 것은 현실의 세상만이 아니다. 편집팀은 가장 AI-클리셰적인 이미지를 고르려 했다. AI는 사람이 가장 클리셰적으로 원할법한 이미지를 출력하려 했다. 디자이너는 모든 것을 담은 한 장의 중재안을 완성해 냈다. 그리고 독자는, 하여튼 반사된 CMYK 이상을 본다. 시선이란 불가피하게 생성형이다.
The Generative AI mirrors the shared lab of the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy. It is not only the real world that is reflected. The editorial team tried to choose the most clichéd image of AI. AI tried to output the most clichéd image that humans would want. The designer finished a one-page mediation that can contain everything. Now, the reader perceives more than just the reflected CMYK. The gaze is in-evitably ‘generative.’

‘있는 그대로를 전하려면, 잡지는 무엇을 의도할 수 있을까요?’
『과학뒤켠』 16호의 테마는 거울입니다. 새로운 기술을, 그것을 개발하는 과정을, 그 구조를 공부하는 사람을, 그런 상호작용에 대한 사유를 한 데 모아 비추고자 했습니다. 그만큼 경험담과 인터뷰의 비중도 여느 때보다 높습니다. 하지만 베드로에 대한 바울의 말이 베드로보다 바울 자신에 대해 더 많이 알려주듯, 잡지 구성은 잡지가 다루는 내용보다 편집팀의 의지를 더 많이 드러냅니다. 가장 깨끗한 거울조차도 크기·위치·각도를 거울상에 반영하기 마련입니다. 오직 모든 의도를 부정하고 존재를 잃은 매체만이 ‘있는 그대로’를 전하는 데에 성공합니다.
따라서 “마치 의도적으로 그렇게 쓴 것처럼”(<프렌치 디스패치>, 2021), 『과학뒤켠』 16호는 마치 의도적으로 그렇게 구성한 것처럼 구성되었습니다. 그 의도란 ‘있는 그대로’ 말하려는 우리 스스로를 다시 응시하는 것입니다. [Mirroring: AI] 섹션은 기술이 인간의 인식을 반영하는 사례를 소개합니다. 여러 각도에서 포착된 AI 산업은 기술보다 인간 사회에 대해 더 많이 알려줄 것입니다. [Mirrored: Study] 섹션은 학생 혹은 연구자들이 과학기술학 공부와 연구를 어떻게 이야기하는지 보여줍니다. 의도된 진실성은 학문보다 사람에 대해 더 많이 알려줄 것입니다. 마지막 [Mirrored: Society] 섹션은 온갖 거울이 서로 비추는 만화경 속으로 여러분을 초대합니다. 무엇이든 섣불리 알 수 없게 될 것입니다.

‘What purpose can the magazine have, if it wants to convey things as they are?’
The theme of Behind Sciences Vol. 16 is the mirror. We wanted to shed light on new technologies, the process of developing them, the people who study those structures and the insights on such interactions. The proportion of experiences and interviews in this volume is the highest ever. However, like the saying, ‘What Paul says about Peter tells us more about Paul than about Peter,’ the organization of the magazine tells us more about the editorial team than about objects. Even the clearest mirrors reflect size, position and angle in the mirror images. Only media that deny every intention and lose their existence will succeed in conveying things exactly as they are.
“Try to make it sound like you wrote it that way on purpose.”(<The French Dispatch>, 2021) Likewise, Behind Sciences 16 was structured as it seems like we structured it that way on purpose. The purpose is to stare back at ourselves trying to describe things as they are. The [Mirroring: AI] section introduces cases where technology mirrors human perception. The AI industry, seen from multiple angles, will tell us more about human society than about technology. The [Mirrored: Study] section shows how students or researchers describe their lives in science and technology studies. This intended integrity will tell us more about people than about academics. Lastly, the [Mirrored: Society] section invites you into a kaleidoscope where all kinds of mirrors reflect each other. Nothing will tell us clearly.

Mirroring: Artificial Intelligence
기술이 제도보다 먼저 사회에 광범위한 영향을 주게 되었다는 점에서 AI는 의식적으로 관심을 가져야할 대상임이 틀림없다. 그간 『과학뒤켠』에도 AI를 주제로 삼은 글이 여러 차례 기고되어 경각심을 일깨운 바 있다. 다만 대조적으로 이번 호는 AI를 매개해 그것을 생산하고 소비하는 인간과 사회를 주로 파악하고자 한다.
[Mirroring: AI] 섹션은 익명 기고로 출발한다. AI 관련 기업에서 인턴으로 일한 기고자는 특정 담론에 의존하지 않고 순전히 자신이 체감한 것을 나열하고 있다. 다시 말해 가장 인간적이고 고유한 감각으로 기업 문화에 의문을 제기한다. 문화, 자본, 권력은 AI 모델 및 서비스에 어떤 식으로건 반영될 만하다.
이어지는 허은진(Ern Chern Khor)의 글은 생성형 AI 컨텐츠가 성차별적인 이유를 다방면으로 탐색한다. 결과물뿐만 아니라 연구, 개발, 사용 등에서도 잠재적 성별 격차가 발견된다. 이 기술은 정보 격차를 해소함으로써 사회적 약자에게 힘이 될 수 있지만, 구체적인 연구와 정책을 동반하지 않고는 기대하기 어렵다.
결국 AI가 가져다줄 사회적 이익을 고려하면 막연한 경계보다는 슬기로운 공존을 목표해야 할 것이다. 정은기, 조호연, 최진은 AI 기반 서비스가 시각장애인의 요구를 충족하려면 현재 어떤 고려가 추가적으로 필요한지 분석한다. 전문가 인터뷰를 근거로 삼아 이들은 지속적인 관심과 제도적 지원의 필요성을 역설한다.
한편 김재리는 근대적인 지능 고하의 담론으로부터 우리를 해방할 계기로 AI를 지목한다. AI 챗봇을 이용한 집단 소설 창작 경험은 지능 외에 가장 인간적인 것이 무엇일지 질문하고 있다. 이처럼 [Mirroring: AI] 섹션에서 AI에 건넨 시선은 우리에게 되돌아와 응답을 요구한다.

Mirrored: Study
[Mirrored: Study] 섹션은 과학기술학을 공부하는 학생들의 흥미진진한 여정을 소개한다. 목표는 학부 부전공 경험부터 대학원 입학, 논문 작성과 졸업까지 학업생활의 기초적 과정을 보여주는 것이다. 이 섹션은 학생으로서의 삶이 가져오는 다양한 경험에 대한 성찰과 솔직한 의견을 거울처럼 비춰낸다.
섹션 전반부는 먼저 천경서의 “과학학과 학생의 삶 : ‘나는 좋은 요리사가 될 수 있을까?’”를 통해 과학학과 학생의 삶을 깊이 들여다 본다. 이 글은 막 연구를 접하기 시작하는 학부생은 물론 해당 분야에서 자신만의 연구 주제를 찾기 위해 노력하는 대학원생 모두를 위한 보편적인 지침을 제공한다.
또 다른 유용한 통찰로 홍완의 과학기술정책대학원(STP) 부전공 프로그램 후기가 이어진다. 그는 STP 부전공을 거쳐 STP 대학원으로 진학한 학생으로서, 과거 자신의 게임 디자인 경험에서 영감을 얻은 “STP 부전공은 내가 한 가장 이상한 방탈출”이라는 글로 그 과정을 탐구한다. 같은 맥락에서 STP 신입생 대상 인터뷰가 특별 페이지에 배정되어 ‘무엇이 그들을 최종 목적지로 데려가는지’ 진로 선택의 경위와 동기를 추적한다.
섹션 후반부는 학생들의 학업생활, 연구 관심사와 학술행사 참여 경험을 모아 차별화된 자료를 완성한다. 특히 STP 연구실 중 ‘느린재난연구실(Slow Disaster Lab)’의 스캇 게이브리얼 놀즈(Scott Gabriel knowles) 교수와 재난학을 연구하는 구성원들을 인터뷰한다. 이 글은 ‘느린재난(slow disaster)’ 개념에 대한 학생들의 관점을 자세히 알아보고, 동시에 매년 진행되는 재난학교(Disaster Haggyo)를 소개한다.
또한 해당 연구실 학생인 박현빈은 산불 재난에 관한 견해 및 2023년 강원세계산림엑스포에 참여한 독특한 경험을 공유한다. 그는 국가와 자본의 이데올로기에 갇혀버린 엑스포의 한계를 지적하면서도 재난 연구자의 눈으로 그 너머를 알아차린다.

다양한 문화가 물결치는 글로벌 사회, 모든 관점은 마치 만화경처럼 반사되고 굴절하며 주의와 검증을 요구한다. 거미줄 속 [Mirrored: Society] 섹션은 집단적 정신을 관통하는 정체성, 대표성, 권력의 실타래를 풀어내고자 성찰적 여정을 시작한다.
섹션의 중심에서 미나허 샤히드(Minahir Shahid)는 파키스탄에 초점을 맞춘다. 이곳의 문화와 종교는 남성과 여성의 지위에 깊게 영향을 주면서 종종 상충한다. “여성과 권력: 파키스탄의 사회규범과 이슬람 가치관의 비판적 대조”에서 우리는 상당한 격차의 성 불평등을 목격하고, 현시대의 현상 유지에 감히 도전하는 여성 활동가들의 끈기를 발견한다. 여성 인권 간 보편적 관련성을 강조하는 안토니우 구테흐스 (António Guterres)의 아이디어 하에 그들의 이야기는 성평등을 위한 파키스탄의 투쟁이 전세계적으로 갖는 중요성을 상기시킨다.
이제 섹션은 손의범의 “도마 위의 <인어공주>(2023) 리뷰”로 시선을 옮긴다. 영화를 둘러싼 논란의 물결이 거센 가운데, 이 글은 야망과 두려움을 간직한 일종의 문화 비평으로서 진정성 있는 각색에 대해 질문하고자 인종, 대표성, 문화 전유 등의 문제를 놓고 씨름하며 아슬하게 바다를 횡단한다. 뜨거운 논쟁은 자연스럽다. 그러나 본 주장은, 보이지 않는 국제적 구도 속에서 비서구권 국가들이 기술과 자본주의 발전으로 인한 새로운 문화적 위협을 직면했다는 것이다.
미로 속 상반된 믿음 사이에서 숙고와 포용의 원칙이 길을 밝혀줄 것이다. 진정한 진보는 배제가 아닌 다양성과 공존을 통해 이루어지는 만큼, [Mirrored: Society] 섹션은 미래를 열어갈 소통의 힘을 강조한다.

Mirroring: Artificial Intelligence
Given that technology has had a far-reaching impact on society before institutions, AI certainly requires conscious attention. Articles on the topic of AI have been published several times in Behind Sciences, sharing awareness. However, in contrast, this issue mainly seeks to understand the people and society that produce and consume AI, perceiving the AI product as a mirror image.
The [Mirroring: AI] section begins with an anonymous contribution. The contributor, who worked as an intern at an AI-related company, lists purely what they experienced without relying on specific discourse. In other words, this article questions corporate culture with the most human and unique sense. It is reasonable to believe that culture, capital, and power are reflected in AI models and services.
The following article by Ern Chern Khor explores the various reasons why generative AI content is sexist. Potential gender gaps are found in research, development and use. This technology can help the socially disadvantaged people by bridging the information gap, but specific research and policies are still lacking.
Similarly, given the social benefits that AI will bring, we should aim for wise coexistence with the technology rather than exclusion. Eunki Joung, Hoyeon Cho and Jeanne Choi analyze what additional considerations are currently needed for AI-based services to meet the needs of the visually impaired people. Based on expert interviews, they emphasize the need for ongoing consideration and institutional support.
Meanwhile, Jerry Kim points to AI as an opportunity to liberate us from the discourse of modern intelligence. The collective novel writing experience using an AI chatbot raises the question of what is the most human thing besides intelligence. The gaze given to AI in the [Mirroring: AI] section returns to us and demands a response.

Mirrored: Study
[Mirrored: Study] section is going to guide you through the exciting journey of the science studies student. It is aimed at showcasing the cornerstones of the student academic life from the STP minor experience to freshmen and graduation with thesis writing process. This section is a mirror with our reflection and honest opinion on the diverse experience that a student’s life brings about.
In the first part of the section you are going to delve deeper into the life of a science studies student through the article of Kyeongseo Cheon “Can I be a good chef? Life as a Science Studies Student”. It is a universal guideline for both undergraduate students who are “green” to science studies and fully-fledged graduate students who are striving to find their research topics in the field.
Another useful experience insight could be found in the article by Wan Hong where he elaborates on taking the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy (STP) minor courses. Wan is an alumni of the minor program who decided to continue his experience with STP and eventually got enrolled in the graduate program. Wan explores the STP minor journey through the thought-provoking concept “The Dumbest Escape Room Ever”, the one adopted from the video games design.
Second part of the section is dedicated to the exclusive material that contains students’ academic life and research interests as well as experience of the participation of the conference. In particular, we welcome you to get acquainted with one of the STP labs – Slow Disaster Lab and its founder, Professor Scott Gabriel Knowles, and members who are fully dedicated to disaster studies. Be prepared to dive into the “slow disaster” concept and students’ opinions on the topic as well as to learn about the Disaster School that takes place every year!
One of the Slow Disaster Lab members, Hyeonbin Park, gives us insight into the wildfire disaster concept in his article as well as shares his unique experience of participation in the 2023 Gangwon World Forest Exhibition. He points out the limits of the exhibition, which is trapped by the ideology of the state and capital, but at the same time he notices beyond it with the eyes of a disaster researcher.

In the mirrored expanse of our global society, where every ripple of cultural expression reflects and refracts upon itself, we find ourselves confronted with a kaleidoscope of perspectives, each vying for attention and validation. Within this complicated web of interconnecting storylines, we begin on an introspective journey, attempting to untangle the threads of identity, representation, and power that run through our collective psyche.
At the heart of this section is the article by Minahir Shahid, focusing on Pakistan, where a rich fabric of culture and religion impacts the position of men and women in deep and often conflicting ways. In “Women and Power: A Critical Contrast of Pakistan’s Social Norms and Islamic Values in an International Context”, we can see enormous gaps in gender inequality, highlighted by the tenacity of female activists who dare to defy the current status quo. Through their stories, we are reminded of the global significance of Pakistan’s struggle for gender equality, echoing the sentiments of António Guterres as he casts a spotlight on the universal relevance of women’s rights.
Simultaneously, we shift our attention to Euibeom Son’s, “Reviewing <The Little Mermiad>(2023) on a Chopping Board”, a cinematic reinterpretation of the movie ‘Little Mermaid’ that delves into the depths of cultural criticism with both ambition and trepidation. As the waves of controversy break against the movie, this review traverses the perilous seas of adaptation and authenticity, wrestling with issues of race, representation, and cultural appropriation. Nonetheless, within the violent oceans of argument, we unearth the hidden confrontation of the global society, explaining the cultural threats faced by non-Western countries due to technological advancement and capitalism.
Inside this maze of opposing beliefs, we uncover routes of possibilities that are lighted by the guiding principles of contemplation and inclusion. Let us embrace dialogue’s transforming potential, understanding that genuine progress is created not from separation, but from the synthesis of many ideas.

It contains thought-provoking articles, honest opinions and exclusive interviews with students from the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy (STP). It is indeed a mirror reflection of our diverse, international student community that shares similar views and values. We are not afraid to discuss pressing issues such as digital divide, racism and gender inequality associated with the development of AI. Together we address
such problems to make a world that goes hand-in-hand with emerging technologies.
Next edition is going to be another brilliant opportunity for students to further the discussions on trendy topics, students’ life and aspirations. We are going to make the next edition more inclusive and personalized by adding exclusive interviews with students and professors. Lab interviews can become a traditional format of spreading a word about the STP community and helping those who are interested to become a part of the team or curious about the lab’s life behind the curtains. It is evermore crucial to welcome professors to speak about their research areas, plans and aspirations and engage in the conversations with their students.
We will also strive to make “Behind Sciences: Volume 17” more diverse by welcoming more international authors from all over the world to share their opinions and experience in the articles. Within the working team it would be beneficial to create a new rubric: “Meet Behind Sciences Authors”, a special event on Zoom or in-person that allows curious readers to engage in lively conversations with our authors and ask them thought-provoking questions.
Behind Sciences is gaining momentum with new people, new opinions and new topics. Keep up with us and stay tuned for the next edition!

Our focus was once again on AI – this time on its qualities and characteristics as a mirror. Zooming in on our reflections in the mirror, we wanted to emphasize that mirror-makers should constantly contemplate of what their mirrors would produce reflections and by who their mirrors would be used. Similarly, those who have acquired the mirrors should contemplate how ‘well’ to use their mirrors. We, too, have mirrors in our hands. What choices are we to make?
It has been meaningful to participate in publishing Behind Sciences. I look forward to our sharing of stories in the coming half-years.
