<Behind Sciences> is a bi-annual magazine (issued in Spring and Fall) by students at the KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy. For non-profit purposes, the magazine is sent free of charge to all who apply. Due to the limited number of magazines, distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis. We hope that the stories we want to tell reach our subscribers. *The magazine can only be delivered to the recipients in the Republic of Korea.

Nowadays, when emerging technologies take over the agenda of policy-makers, form public opinion and new values in the society, it is evermore crucial to take stock of the technological progress that humanity has been seeking for many decades. With the technologies comes a huge responsibility for the nature that brought up many human civilizations. But what needs to be done to preserve our alma mater, planet Earth, with its unique environment?
There is no right and clear answer on this existential question, however, the readers of Behind sciences volume 17 can find out about the crucial step towards the bright future of upcoming generations – sustainability. But how to pursue a sustainable way of life? Is it really important and how to conceptualize it? This term is overused in the modern world due to the hype over the concept itself. Our magazine offers a much needed insight where science and technology policy scholars rethink contemporary sustainability and challenge the outdated views.
In volume 17 the team of Behind sciences does not discuss the “sustainability” as a separate notion or paradigm, we rather connect it with the familiar ideas and concepts, and critically rethink the contemporary views. We believe that sustainability lies somewhere between “Science and Technology” and “Culture and Life” – two interconnected, valuable paradigms where sustainability can complement these concepts. Contributors from the Section 1 unleash and discuss such unique views as “AI as a solution to Sustainability issues”, “Sustainability of automated vehicles (AVs)”, “Urban Sustainability” and even provide the recipe for “Sustainable quantum physics”. Section 2 discusses the sustainable way of life and cultural aspects of the society challenging the notions of “Consuming Sustainability”, “Sustainable Eating”, “Sustainability and cultural heritage”. Special feature pages contain Op-ed article on the AVs and overview on the burgeoning topic of the QS University Rankings, including KAIST Sustainability evaluation. This volume also includes the Special pages that feature the insights into vibrant life of the Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy (STP).
This comprehensive and insightful work shifts the narrow focus from “sustainability” to “Sustainability” with capital “S” that includes a more comprehensive worldview, where each and every person thinks and acts sustainably, creating a better future for upcoming generations. Behind sciences volume 17 is the tiny, but crucial step in forming sustainable public opinion. We encourage our readers to join us in this valuable mission, carefully read, reflect and discuss the articles of this magazine!

오늘날 신기술이 정책 입안자의 의제로 자리 잡고, 공공 여론과 사회의 새로운 가치를 형성하면서 인류가 오랜 세월 추구해 온 기술 발전을 다시 되돌아보는 일은 그 어느 때보다 중요해졌습니다. 기술과 함께 우리는 인류 문명이 바꿔온 자연에 대한 막대한 책임도 지게 되었습니다. 그렇다면 우리의 터전인 지구를 지키기 위해 무엇을 해야 할까요?
이러한 실존적 질문에 대한 명확한 답은 없지만 Behind Sciences 17호에서는 다가올 세대의 밝은 미래를 위해 중요한 걸음인 ‘지속가능성’을 다룹니다. 지속 가능한 삶을 어떻게 추구해야 할까요? 이는 정말 중요한 것일까요? 그렇다면 어떻게 개념화할 수 있을까요? 현대 사회에서는 ‘지속가능성’이란 의미 그 자체에 대한 과도한 관심으로 인해 용어가 남용되기도 합니다. 본 잡지에서는 과학기술정책 연구자들이 현대의 지속가능성을 재고하고 낡은 관점에 도전하는 데 필요한 통찰을 제공합니다.
Behind Sciences 17호에서는 ‘지속가능성’을 단순한 개념이나 패러다임으로 다루지 않습니다. 우리는 익숙한 아이디어와 개념과 연결하여 현대의 시각을 비판적으로 재검토합니다. 우리는 지속가능성이 “과학과 기술”과 “문화와 삶,” 서로 연결된 이 두 가지의 패러다임 사이에 존재한다고 믿습니다. Section 1의 기고자들은 “AI를 통한 지속가능성 문제 해결”, “자율주행차의 지속가능성”, “도시의 지속가능성”, 그리고 “지속 가능한 양자 물리학”에 관한 레시피까지 제시하며 독특한 관점을 선보입니다. Section 2에서는 지속 가능한 삶의 방식과 사회의 문화적 측면을 다루며, “지속 가능한 소비”, “지속 가능한 식생활”, 그리고 “지속가능성과 문화유산”과 같은 주제를 다룹니다. 특별 기사에서는 자율주행차에 대한 오피니언과 QS 대학 순위, 특히 KAIST의 지속가능성 평가에 대한 내용을 담고 있습니다. 마지막으로 과학기술정책대학원의 활기찬 삶에 대한 통찰을 담은 특별 페이지도 준비되어 있습니다.
이러한 포괄적이고 통찰력 있는 작업을 통해 좁은 관점의 “sustainability(지속가능성)”에서 벗어나, 각 개인이 지속 가능한 사고와 행동을 함으로써 미래 세대를 위해 더 나은 세상을 창조하는, 더 넓은 세계관을 담은 대문자 “S”의 “Sustainability”로 나아가고자 합니다. 독자 여러분도 이 소중한 여정에 함께하시길 바라며 매거진의 글을 읽고, 깊이 생각하고, 함께 논의해 주시기를 기대합니다!

거칠게 말하자면 망해가는 지구에서 ‘지속가능성’을 말하려는 것은 어쩌면 대단한 배짱이고 용기입니다. 우리가 일상에서 ‘지속가능성’을 어떻게 이야기해 볼 수 있을지에 대해, 각자의 고민과 이야기를 나눠준 기고자들과 편집자들에게 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 이야기는 들여다봐주는 존재들 덕분에 힘을 얻습니다. 앞으로도 독자분들의 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.
과학뒤켠 18호의 편집장을 맡게 되었습니다. 다음 호수에서 저의 역할이 정해진 날, 과학뒤켠 홈페이지에 올라와 있는 역대 발간된 과학뒤켠을 훑어보았습니다. 한국어 잡지였던 과학뒤켠은 한국어 글과 영어 글을 모두 싣게 되었고, 다른 학생 잡지와 협업을 하기도 했고, 섹션과 주제도 다양해졌습니다. 이번 17호에도 Minahir가 기획한 스페셜 섹션이 새롭게 포함되었고, 이는 잡지의 성격을 넓혀주었습니다.
18호가 출간될 내년이면 과학뒤켠이 창간된 지 10년 차(만으로는 9년)입니다. 과학기술에 대한 학생들의 다양한 이야기를 담아내고 공유하여 읽을 수 있는 이 매체가 소중하다고 생각합니다. 18호 기획 단계에서는 앞으로의 과학뒤켠이 어떠한 방향성을 갖고 가면 좋을지에 대한 고민을 함께 해보고 싶습니다. 이를 위해 과학뒤켠을 기획하고 읽어온 분들을 대상으로 한 설문조사, 인터뷰 등을 고민해 보고 있습니다.
학생은 많은 것에 주춤하기에 쉽지만, 그것을 동작으로 상상해 보면 추진력을 얻기 위한 준비 자세 같기도 합니다. 과학뒤켠이 엄격한 자기 검열이나 망설임을 내려놓고 학생들이 이야기할 수 있는 공간이 되길 바랍니다. 과학뒤켠 18호도 그러한 공간이 되고자 노력하겠습니다. 지켜봐 주세요!

It requires so much courage to talk about sustainability on a planet that’s facing significant challenges. I’d like to express my gratitude to all the contributors and editors who have shared their thoughts and experiences on how we can talk about sustainability in our lives. Stories gain meaning from those who take the time to read them. I hope readers continue to show interest and support for our magazine.
I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief for Vol.18 of Behind Sciences. On the day I was appointed, I looked through the past volumes of Behind Sciences on the website and was so impressed by how much the magazine has changed and grown. It started out as a Korean-language magazine, but it now publishes articles in both Korean and English. It has also collaborated with another student magazine and expanded its sections and topics. Vol.17 was particularly noteworthy for its inclusion of a new special section planned by Minahir, which introduced a refreshing new dimension to the magazine.
When Vol.18 is published, Behind Sciences will have been around for 10 years (9 years in total)! I believe this publication, which captures and shares students’ diverse experiences and insights on science and technology, is truly valuable. Therefore, I hope that Vol.18 has a chance to reflect on the future direction of Behind Sciences. I’m considering conducting a survey or interviews with those who have contributed to and read the magazine so far.
Students often hesitate over many things, but if you imagine that hesitation as a movement, it can also look like a preparation to gain momentum. I hope that Behind Sciences becomes a space where students can let go of rigid self-censorship and hesitation, feeling free to share their stories. We will continue striving to make Vol.18 of Behind Sciences such a space. Please stay tuned!

As Vice Editor-in-Chief, it’s been a privilege to bring you this edition, crafted with passion and fresh ideas. In the design, I intend to showcase sustainability in its real raw form, using different contexts as examples. The idea behind this volume design, and layout was inspired by my imaginative creativity and the urge towards driving change and innovation. I designed the magazine with the ambition to inspire STP students to not be afraid of doing something that is not a norm (yet). I believe, each project is reflective of it’s designer’s inspiration and creativity, and there should be no one design for a magazine to follow. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas, to showcase yourself in your projects, and play with colors and designs. I hope it inspires you to see the world in new and exciting ways. Until next time, stay creative!
