Interview for Ayesha

Question 1) A Brief Self-Introduction
Hello, my name is Ayesha Saddique, and I’m a 22-year-old from Pakistan. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology and am excited to pursue my Master’s degree in the Science and Technology Policy (STP) program at KAIST.

Question 2) Motivation for applying to the STP, How did you come to know about STP and KAIST?
During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong interest in challenges faced by the older adults, particularly in their adoption and utilization of technological advancements. While researching potential Master’s programs, I came across the STP program at KAIST, which aligns perfectly with my research interests. After graduating, I was searching for high-ranked universities with majors that aligned with my interests. Luckily, during that time I was watching a show called ‘University War,’ where all top-ranked Korean university students participated, and that’s where I got my initial introduction to KAIST. Then, I did my own research and found the Science and Technology Policy (STP) program, which matched my academic and research interests.

Question 3) Areas of interest (academic or anything)
My research background in Applied Psychology has equipped me with a strong foundation in quantitative research methods. I’m particularly interested in exploring the intersection of aging, technology, and disaster resilience, with a focus on developing policies and interventions that promote healthy aging and resilience among older adults. Also, I’m really interested in learning Korean. I love the language because of how melodic it sounds and its unique cultural nuances. As a personal interest, I would love to learn and be fluent in Korean one day.

Question 4) Activities you want to engage in (academic or anything)
During my time at KAIST, I hope to engage in various academic and extracurricular activities that can help me grow more as a person and a skilled researcher and policymaker. So, I’m interested in participating in research projects and collaborating with peers from diverse backgrounds. I would also love to participate in cultural exchange activities.

Question 5) Plans for the future? Career aspirations?
After completing my Master’s degree in STP, I aim to pursue a career in policymaking or research, where I can apply my knowledge and skills to make a  positive social change. I’m particularly interested in working with organizations that focus on aging, healthcare, and disaster resilience.

Hi! My name is Yasmin. I’m from the UK, but I was born in Seoul. I then lived in Spain, the UK, Singapore, and the US. I studied immunology at the University of Manchester for my undergraduate degree.

Question 2) Motivation for applying to the STP, How did you come to know about STP and KAIST?
I studied immunology in my undergraduate because I was interested in biomedical science, but I wanted to focus on something more specific. Because the pandemic was going on when I was applying for undergraduate programmes, I decided on immunology as it seemed interesting and relevant. I took a bioethics and history of medicine class during my degree and became interested in the social and ethical implications of biomedicine. When considering my options for my immediate future after graduation, I was looking at graduate programs involving policy and came across STP. I found the programme and the research being done at STP really interesting.

Question 3) Areas of interest (academic or anything)
I’m really interested in biomedical and health policy and have pretty varied interests in those fields. But I’m currently interested in and involved in a research project about governance of synthetic biology and biofoundries. I am particularly interested in the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework and anticipatory governance and how ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) are incorporated into the development and implementation of emerging biotechnology.

Question 4) Activities you want to engage in (academic or anything)
I’m still exploring my interests, so I’m happy to engage in any opportunities that come my way. I would love to be able to travel around Korea and Asia while I am here, and I really want to improve my Korean!

Question 5) Plans for the future? Career aspirations?
I’m still exploring my options, but I’m interested in roles within government and policymaking, especially related to science technology governance. I want to contribute to shaping policies that ensure responsible innovation and the equitable development of emerging technologies.

My experiment for the science fair in high school was eaten by raccoons. Multiple times. A seagull once swooped down and stole a sandwich out of my hands.

Question 1) A Brief Self-Introduction
Hi! My name is Ryanna Saidnattar. I just started my second semester as a Ph.D. student in di-Lab, led by Professor Park Kyung Ryul. I was born and grew up in Paris, but my dad is Cambodian and my mom is Sino-Japanese.

Question 2) Motivation for applying to the STP, How did you come to know about STP and KAIST?
 I first heard of KAIST because my school in France offered a Double Master’s Degree with BTM (Business and Technology Management). I got accepted with four other students and we arrived in 2021. At that time, there were only a couple of international students on campus due to the pandemic, so we all knew each other. That’s how I met Monika, a student from Lithuania, who was just starting her Master’s at STP. She sparked my interest and three years later, I decided to apply and dive deep into the topic. I see STP as a natural progression from my Law and Technology Management background.

Question 3) Areas of interest (academic or anything)
I am interested in the governance of emerging technologies, with a focus on AI for my academic research. Governance is about finding a balance between innovation and control (through regulations, policies and cooperation). My focus is on developing countries where the applications of those technologies are more relevant to me. They could help solve fundamental problems that traditional systems have failed to solve. In my non-academic time, the technology that actually fascinates me is Blockchain technology and its endless use cases. I guess the values it represents – transparency and by extension trust – resonate with me.

Question 4) Activities you want to engage in (academic or anything)
In academia, I would love to work on a paper with a group of co-authors. It might be the beginner in me talking, but it sounds like an exciting journey to take part in as a team. Outside of academia, I want to see more of South Korea and avoid trapping myself in the KAIST academic bubble. I try to step away from Daejeon when time allows. I also love going to my boxing club in Gungdong, where I get to meet very different people from outside the campus.

Question 5) Plans for the future? Career aspirations?
One rule I try to live by is to never share any plans before they become concrete, especially if my words are going to be printed in black ink… But to share one of my aspirations: I would love to contribute to the development of the small, often overlooked country of Cambodia, no matter what form that contribution may take. This country is very dear to me, and I’d be fulfilled if I could make myself useful to it.

Question 1) 짧은 자기 소개
이번 학기 석사 과정 신입생 곽도아입니다. 저는 스페인어랑 AI를 전공했고, 최근에는 미주기구 CITEL(Comisión Interamericana de Telecomunicaciones, the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission)에서 인턴을 하다가 왔어요. 관심 분야는 ICT 국제 협력, 디지털 격차, AI 윤리입니다.

Question 2) STP에 입학하게 된 계기
대학교에서 스페인어를 전공했어요. 스페인뿐만 아니라 개발도상국이 많은 중남미 지역의 지역학도 배우다 보니, 선진국과 개발도상국 사이의 국제개발 협력이 많이 이루어진다는 것을 배웠습니다. 그중에 ICT가 중남미 민주주의를 발전시키는데 큰 역할을 할 수 있겠다고 깨달아서, 대학원에 진학하자는 결심이 생겼어요. AI윤리에도 원래 관심도 있었기 때문에, STP가 좋은 기회로 여겨졌습니다.

 학문적인 건 아까 얘기했으니까, 취미를 얘기하자면 취미는 자전거 타는 걸 좋아합니다. 원래 대전 사람이라, 갑천 따라서 자전거를 많이 탑니다. (웃음) 그리고 영화 보는 것도 좋아하고, 영화는 남들이 잘 안 보는 영화 보는 것도 좋아합니다. 제일 좋아하는 영화는 에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스.

Question 4) 대학원 생활 동안 해보고 싶은 것 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
밴드도 해보고 싶어요. 고등학생까지는 정해진 길을 따라 걷다가, 대학생 때는 일종의 과도기였고, 이제는 하고 싶은 것을 찾아서 하고 살고 싶습니다. 그중의 하나로, 고등학생 때 잠깐 친구 따라 밴드를 했었는데, 지금 다시 한번 해보고 싶습니다. 

Question 5)  미래 계획 (진로든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
학부 때는 이 분야, 즉 스페인어나 AI, 디지털 격차 등 분야에 대한 전문 지식이 없다고 생각했었는데, 대학원에 오면 전문 지식이 있다고 정도는 말할 수 있는 정도로 성장하고 싶어요. 말하자면 나중에 더 많은 미래 계획을 세울 수 있도록, 더 많이 성장하고 싶습니다.

안녕하세요, 이번에 STP 석박통합과정에 들어오게 된 차종은입니다.

Question 2) STP에 입학하게 된 계기
우선은, 학부는 미국에서 간호학을 전공했는데, 간호학과 의대 수업이 비슷한 점이 많아서, 더 새로운 걸 배워보는 생각에 대학원을 찾았습니다. 그래서 다른 대학원에서 의과대학원에서 석사 과정으로 의료정보학을 공부했는데, 파트타임이라 그런지 많이 배우지 못했다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그 후로 녹십자 헬스케어에서 플랫폼 콘텐츠와 신사업 기획을 했었는데, 아무리 좋은 서비스를 제공해도 서비스에 익숙하지 못한 고령인들은 활용을 못하는 걸 직접 보고는 놀랐습니다. 그래서 STP의 최문정 교수님 연구실을 보고, 이런 신기술을 잘 활용해서 고령인들이 갖는 이런 어려움에 대한 니즈를 해결할 수 있을까 싶어서 진학하게 되었습니다.  

Question 3) 관심 분야 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
말했듯이, 고령인들 사이에서 발생하는 건강 불평등에 관심이 있습니다. 건강 정보라는 것이 나이가 들수록 관심이 커지는 게 맞기는 하지만, 어려운 의학 용어 속에서 건강 정보를 인지하고 그걸 실천하는 게 어렵습니다. 그래서 건강 정보를 평가하고, 알맞은 맞춤형 건강 정보를 전달하는 데 관심이 있습니다. 그리고 고령화가 일어났는데 사람의 수는 줄었기 때문에, 요즘에는 돌봄을 기술로 대체해서 돌봄 케어를 제공하는 데 목표가 있어요. 이를 개발하는 것뿐만 아니라 어떻게 쉽게 잘 활용할 수 있는지 관심이 많습니다.  

Question 4) 대학원 생활 동안 해보고 싶은 것 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
학술적으로는 물론 교수님과 연관된 프로젝트에 참여하면서 경험을 쌓고 싶습니다. 저는 의학 채널 피디로도 근무했었는데, 그때는 건강 정보를 전달하는 일을 했었어요. 그래서 기회가 된다면, 고령인 대상으로 건강 정보를 만들어보고 이를 전달하는 활동도 해보고 싶습니다. SNS든, 실제 활동이든, 봉사가 되든, 어떤 기회든 주어진다면 해보고 싶습니다.

Question 5)  미래 계획 (진로든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
아직 입학한 지 얼마 되지 않았기 때문에, STP가 정확히 어떤 학문인지 그 정의부터 알아가는 것이 우선의 목표입니다. 지금은 건강 불평등과 헬스 리터러시(health literacy)에 대한 관심이 많지만, 교수님들을 만나고 학계 속에서 여러 정보를 들으면서 저의 관심사에 대해 더 깊게 알아가고 싶어요. 그리고 그걸 찾게 되면 졸업 후에도 그 일을 하게 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

안녕하세요, 저는 올해 석사 1학기로 입학한 서주은이라고 합니다. 학부에서 문화인류학을 전공했고, 인류세와 페미니스트 STS에 관심이 있고, 퀴어 이론이나 생태 쪽으로도 관심이 있습니다.

Question 2) STP에 입학하게 된 계기
연극을 만들어왔습니다. 극작이랑 연출로, 문화인류학에서 배운 것들과 받은 인사이트들로 만들었어요. 새로운 관점들을 문화인류학에서 배웠기 때문에, 이러한 좋은 관점들을 사람들에게 알려주고 싶었습니다. 처음 대학교 입학하고 나서 문화인류학을 너무 좋아해서 오히려 스트레스를 받았어요. 연극을 하면서는 글이 아닌 다른 포맷으로 이걸 표현할 수 있어서, 한동안 연극을 표현과 소통의 장으로 사용하면서 연극을 4개 정도는 만든 것 같아요. 동아리 친구들과 프로젝트 극단을 만들어서 공연을 하다가, 해양오염과 바다생물에 대한 극을 만든 적이 있습니다. 그때 논문을 찾아 읽다가 너무 재밌어서 연구해야겠다고 결심했습니다. 

Question 3) 관심 분야 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
앞에 연극 얘기는 했고, 그 외에 1년 동안 테크노클럽에서 라이트 자키, 즉 조명 일을 알바 삼아서 했었습니다. 학문적인 관심사는 아직 넓은 것 같아요. 기본적인 관심은 인류세입니다. 문화인류학을 공부하면서 배웠던 빈곤이나 주거, 농업, 기후 위기 등이 인류세라는 테마 속에서 얽히고설키는 것이 재밌습니다. 학부 때 동자동 쪽방촌을 공공주택으로 재개발하겠다는 정책이 왜 계류 중인지에 대해 다 같이 한 학기 동안 연구를 했던 경험이 있습니다. 그러다 보니 정책 분야에 관심도 생겼고, 농활을 한참 하다 보니 농업이나 기후 위기 등에도 관심이 생기고, 어떻게 농민과 연대할 수 있을지 이런 고민도 했었어요. 이렇게 인생이 중구난방이었어요. (웃음) 그래서 이걸 인류세라는 키워드로 정리해 보고자 합니다.

Question 4) 대학원 생활 동안 해보고 싶은 것 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
앞으로 어떻게 될지는 모르겠는데, 그동안 중구난방으로 살아온 인생을 좀 정리하면서도 가지치기하겠다는 생각입니다. 이런 말을 해도 될진 모르겠지만, 사주가 올해는 가지치기하는 단계라고 했어요. (웃음) 조금 더 공부에 집중하지 않을까 싶습니다.

지금은 특별히 없습니다. 공부를 해보고 공부가 적성에 맞는다 싶으면 박사를 갈 생각이긴 합니다. 최소한 1년은 해봐야지 감이 좀 잡힐 것 같아서, 아직은 무언가를 결정해 놓거나 정해놓지는 않으려고 합니다. 인생을 살면서 장기적인 플랜은 안 세우는 타입이에요. 지금은 하고 싶고 재밌는 것에 집중하면서, 그게 길이 되는지 관망하려고 합니다. 오히려 앞으로 졸업 이후에 어떻게 될까를 스스로 기대하고 있습니다.

안녕하세요, 이번에 STP 석박통합으로 들어온 박서현이라고 합니다. 예전에 경제학을 공부했었고, 작년에 1년 동안 파트타임 석사과정을 했습니다. STP 공부에 보다 전념하고자 풀타임 석박통합과정으로 전환해 들어오게 되었습니다.

Question 2) STP에 입학하게 된 계기
원래 석사 2년 후 박사로 지원할 예정이었으나, 1년 수업을 들으면서 과학기술정책을 전문적으로 공부해 보고자 하는 의지가 강해졌습니다. 파트타임은 등록금이 비싸기도 했구요. (웃음) 원래 관심 있던 주제가, 과학자사회와 과학자조직 내외에서 일어나는 다양한 상호작용, 다양한 의견들이 어떻게 조율되는지에 대한 의문이 있었습니다. 구체적인 그림이 석사 때는 없었지만, 우석균 교수님 수업과 지도를 받으면서 과학의 과학(science of science)도 알게 되고 하다 보니, 또 콜로퀴움 때 스기모토(Cassidy R. Sugimoto) 선생님이 하신 세미나를 들으면서, 내가 알고 싶은 것을 연구하는 실제 방법을 알게 됐어요. 그래서 박사를 확실히 가는 게 좋을 것 같고, 어차피 갈 거면 1년 더 빠르게 가는 게 문제가 없을 것 같다고 생각했습니다.. 

Question 3) 관심 분야 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
국내 과학자들의 이동성에 대한 연구를 일단 “올해는” 하고 싶어요. 시민 과학이나, 어떤 방식으로든 여러 과학기술정책의 어젠다가 설정되는 과정 자체에 관심이 있습니다. 아직 1학기라 구체적으로 사례는 찾지는 못했지만, 언제나 열어두고 있습니다. 과학기술 관련 공공기관에서 일하면서, 어떻게 과학기술정책 어젠다가 설정되어야 하는지에 대해 설명할 수 있는 근거가 늘 부족하다고 생각했습니다. 물론 그 어려움이 이해가 가지만, 지금 연구하고자 하는 과학의 과학 분야가 좀 더 잘 한국의 실제 사례에 적용이 되면 과학기술정책 어젠다를 형성하는데 더 좋을 거라는 생각이 있어요.

Question 4) 대학원 생활 동안 해보고 싶은 것 (학문적이든, 다른 어떤 분야든)
아주 원대한 꿈이 있어요. 자녀 계획에 대한 원대한 꿈. (웃음) 일단 향후 연구할 데이터셋을 잘 만들어놓고, 논문도 쓰는 것부터 아닐까요? 자격시험도 끝내야 하고, 카이스트 협동조합에서 제공하는 운동 프로그램도 열심히 참여할 생각입니다.

좋은 기회가 있으면 포닥에 가고싶습니다. 더 좋은 기회가 있으면, 국내 과학기술정책 기관이나 과학기술 연구원의 정책 부서에서 연구를 계속 할 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.
